40-Session Residency for Grades 6-12
Students learn “la clave,” the bell pattern (rhythm) that is contained in all Afro-Caribbean music. Once students learn the pattern, students explore movement and eventually create movement phrases and/or dances based on the clave. Students may also learn a Haitian dance, a Spanish dance phrase, and/or dances such as Salsa, Cha Cha Cha, and Merengue.

After students learn dances from two major cultures of the Caribbean—West African and Spanish— students learn the style of dance that came out of the Caribbean Islands when the two cultures “mixed,” such as Salsa, Cha Cha Cha, and Merengue.
